“Offline” and “always knows the exact station” are not the same promise. That distinction is especially important on a metro journey.

What offline means for MetroPing
MetroPing's station detection happens on the device, so an active journey does not need a cloud request for every location update.
That design is useful when mobile data becomes unreliable between stations or inside tunnels.
Why underground travel is still difficult
The phone still needs enough location information to estimate movement. GPS can weaken or disappear underground, and a device may return a stale, uncertain, or jumping position.
MetroPing then has to decide whether that reading represents real progress. Reacting too quickly can create an early alert; waiting for more certainty can make the alert late.
What riders should expect during the beta
Station detection is still being improved one real journey at a time. Results can vary by route, phone, permissions, and device battery settings.
Use MetroPing as an additional reminder. Train announcements, display boards, and station signs remain the important backups.
Offline helps. It does not make underground signals perfect.
The beta is measuring where on-device detection is reliable and where it still needs improvement.
